NEWS AND NOTES June 3: Detroit has
released veteran Canadian DT Vaughn Martin. The former Western Ontario
grad was originally a 3rd round pick by San Diego, but signed with the
Lions as an unrestricted fee agent earlier this year. Oddly, the Lions
filled Martin's spot on the roster with another Canadian, former
Eastern Michigan DE Kalonji Kashama.
May 19: Carolina has signed Montreal OT David Foucault as an undrafted rookie free agent after the team's rookie minicamp this past weekend. The 6-7 Foucault was the 5th pick overall at last week's CFL draft by Montreal May 13: The expansion Ottawa Red Blacks - yes that is the team’s new name - shook up the 2014 Canadian league draft by trading the #1 pick overall to Calgary for veteran C John Gott, a western league All-star last fall. Calgary, which also got the rights to retired C Marwan Hage to complete the deal, selected Laval C Pierre Lavertu with this year’s top pick. Ottawa then traded veteran QB Kerry Glenn to British Columbia for the 5th pick which they then flipped with Montreal which had the 4th pick. When the dust settled both Ottawa and Montreal chose players from the Universite of Montreal; Ottawa got DB Antoine Pruneau with the 4th pick, while Montreal got 6-8 OT David Foucualt with the 5th pick. Here are the picks from the CFL draft. Incredibly, given historical trends, only one of the 65 players taken at this year's CFL draft played at a CIS school. As recently as 2013, 5 of the 9 first-round picks - and 15 picks overall - played their college football in the states.The lone exception was Northwestern State G/T Tchissakid Player, who was the 12th player taken by British Columbia. Meanwhile, McGill OT Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, easily the top overall prospect this year, was ony the 19th player selected by Calgary after he was a 6th round pick at the NFL draft and likely won't be available for CFL play for some time. 11: A total of 4 Canadian players were selected on the third day
of the 2014 NFL draft. Virginia DT Brent Urban was first off the board
when the 300-pound 5-tech DE wasselected by Baltimore with the 134th
overall pick in the 4th round. Baltimore was back at it in the 5th
round when the Ravens selected Winnipeg-born OG John Urschel of Penn
State with the 175th pick. Detroit then selected Notre Dame WR T.J.
Jones with the 189th pick in the 6th round, while McGill OT Laurent
