TOP TEAM DRAFTS

1) Buffalo: It wasn't all that long ago that the expectation was that the Bills would be in the hunt for the top pick at this year's draft. Instead, the Bills are unexpectedly right in the middle of the hunt for a playoff spot thanks in large part to a productive 2014 draft. WR Sammy Watkins, whom the Bills traded up to take with the 4th pick this year, has been one of the top rookies in the league so far to date, Same for LB Preston Bown (3rd), while OT Seantrel Henderson, whom the Bills stole with a 7th round pick, has arguably been the best player selected in any round on the third day.

2) Cleveland: Johnny Who!! Like their Lake Erie cousins from up north, the Browns have been one of the surprise teams of the current season; and like the Bills, a surprisngly good rookie class gets a lot of the credit despite the fact that QB Johnny Manziel, the most celebrated pick this past May, has barely gotten off the bench. In fact, the Browns haven't got much from their first round picks as CB Justin Gilbert, the 8th player taken this year, has really struggled. At the same time, though, the RB combination of 3rd rounder Terrence West and undrafted rookie free agency Isaiah Crowel has given the Browns running game a real boost, while OG Joel Bitonio and LB Christian Kirksey have been solid. And WR Taylor Gabriel, another undrafted free agent, has given the passing game a big-play option.

3) Oakland: Things have been really tough for the still winless Raiders this fall, but there may be a smidgen of light at the end of the proverbial football tunnel after a solid 2014 draft. QB Derek Carr, for eample, looks like a keeper, while OLB Khalil Mack, the 5th player taken this year has been one of the Raiders better defenders, although he still hasn't made many big plays. Meanwhile, OG Gabe Jackson (3rd), NT Justin Ellis (4th), and CB T.J. Carrie (7th) have also contributed meaningful minutes.

4) Minnesota: The Vikings think they have their QB of the future in Teddy Bridgewater who has made rookie mistakes, but has also shown pretty good poise in the pocket for a first-year player. Meanwhile, Anthony Barr, the 9th player taken this year, has already started to make big plays, while RB Jerick McKinnon (3rd) leads all rookie rushers this year.

5) Jacksonville: They still obviously have a ways to go, but the Jags may have the makings of a pretty future good passing attack with QB Blake Bortles, the 3rd player picked this year, throwing to second-round WRs Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee, along with undrafted rookie receiver Allen Hurns. Bortles, though, is the key and while he's made his share of rookie mistakes so far this fall, he is probably the only rookie QB who has been asked to try and do more than just not to lose today and has been willing to stand in the pocket and get the ball downfield. In fact, 7 of the Jags' 9 picks this year have started games including LB Telvin Smith, a 5th rounder who is 4th on the team in tackles.

The next 5: Dallas; St. Louis; Chicago; Tennessee and Indianapolis
