Scherff, Iowa, 6-5,
325, 4.95, SR … Fifth-year senior who the Iowa
coaches feels could be the best ever to come out of the school at the
position
which is pretty high praise from a program that produced Robert
Gallery, the
second player selected in 2004; freakish athlete who originally played
QB in
high school where he also lettered in baseball, basketball and even
tennis in
addition to being a state champion shot putter; fifth-year senior
played OG in
2011, before being entrenched at LT the following year; weight-room
warrior
with tremendous strength; brings that strength to the run game where he
is punishing
drive-blocker who plays with an attitude; comes off the snap low,
explodes into
blocks and doesn’t ease up until the whistle blows; can also slide off
the initial
block and make a play at the second level; however, didn’t start
playing OT
until his senior year in high school and is still somewhat rough around
the
edges in pass protection; lacks the prototype long arms for a pro OT,
although
he still has a very effective punch, but his overall hand placement
technique
isn’t always textbook; is very light on his feet with impressive range
and lateral
agility; has the ability to cut off the edge, as well as plant and
change
direction, but can be a little mechanical setting up in the pocket;
character player
with an excellent football IQ who rarely blows an assignment; has had
some
durability issues as he missed the final 5 games of the 2012 season
with a with a broken fibula and dislocated
ankle; also needed
surgery early
this season to repair a torn MCL, but did not miss any game time even
though he
was originally expected to miss at least 2-3 weeks; top 5-10 prospect
who could
start his pro career inside at OG. If you have comments or suggestions, e-mail the editor at clindsc555@rogers.com; the GBN can also be reached by phone at (613) 692-1088; or regular mail at 320 Shadehill Cres., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; K2J 0L6.
